65-70% of deforestation is caused by cattle ranching. Cattle ranching is the process of clearing the rainforest in order to grow beef for the world market. One economic cause is cattle ranching. It shows how the vegetation in the Amazon region is the highest. Also, since 1970, over 600,000 square kilometers (232,000 square miles) of Amazon rainforest have been destroyed. Between May 2000 and August 2006, Brazil lost nearly 150,000 square kilometers of forest which is an area larger than Greece. A lot of the Amazon rainforest has already been destroyed. This rainforest is home to as many as 90 percent of the plant and animal species throughout the world. It is the world’s largest rainforest, 1.4 billion acres. The Amazon rainforest is a tropical rainforest located in the Amazon basin of South America. Many different aspects are causing the rainforest to become destroyed. Deforestation is a significant issue that is occurring in the Amazon rainforest right now.Which Solution is More Effective? Solution #1 because something can directly be done in order to decrease deforestation. Negatives: This may not decrease the problem of deforestation directly. Positives: This will raise awareness to more people, and help prevent further destruction of the rainforest in the future. Solution #2 Government mandated school programs in the region to create further awareness.

Positives: This would help preserve the environment Negatives: This would hurt the economy Solution #1 Law Enforcement: The government could make a law stating that a person is not allowed to cut down trees around the rainforest area, and if that person does, they will receive a fine. Political Effects Deforestation increases because the government is not fully caring about the harms it causes Political Causes Some government agencies continue to plan and build roads Some government incentive programs promote agriculture Social Effects The flooding of dams destroys the rainforest Wildfires destroy the rainforest Migrants clear the land in order to claim land for themselves Social Causes Dams Wildfires Poor migrants Ex: the Balbina dam More Economic Effects Farmers are expanding their pasture areas by clearing out parts of the rainforest Soy bean farms are created More Background Between May 2000 and August 2006, Brazil lost nearly 150,000 square kilometers of forest Since 1970, over 600,000 square kilometers of Amazon rainforest have been destroyed Įconomic Causes Cattle ranching Logging Currency Devaluation Agriculture Fires Mining Įconomic Effects Rainforest is cleared out in order to raise cattle to produce beef Trees are being cut down to sell as timber New roads are built in place of the rainforest The rainforest is losing its ability to stay green due to fires Many different species of animals are losing their habitats- can lead to extinction Plants are being killed īackground The Amazon rainforest is a tropical rainforest located in Brazil It is the largest rainforest in the world-1.4 billion acres Home to many animals and plants Deforestation is an issue occurring in the Amazon rainforest right now What is Deforestation? Deforestation is the process of cutting down, damaging and burning a rainforest. However, the hot, moist atmosphere and all the dead plant material create the perfect conditions in which bacteria and other microorganisms can thrive.Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest By: Cristina Helmes Few plants are found on the floor of the forest due to the lack of sunlight. This material decomposes rapidly in the wet, warm conditions (like a compost pile) sending nutrients back into the soil. The bottom layer or floor of the rainforest is covered with wet leaves and leaf litter. Because of the small amount of sunlight and rainfall these plants receive, they adapt easily to home environments. A large number of plants from this level are used as common houseplants. The middle layer, or understory, is made up of vines, smaller trees, ferns, and palms. They climb trees in the canopy to reach for sunlight. Thick, woody vines are also found in the canopy. This layer of vegetation prevents much of the sunlight from reaching the ground. The top layer or canopy contains giant trees that grow to heights of 75 m (about 250 ft) or more.

It is known for its dense canopies of vegetation that form three different layers. The tropical rainforest is a hot, moist biome where it rains all year long. Temperate rainforests are found near the cooler coastal areas further north or south of the equator. Tropical rainforests are found closer to the equator where it is warm. There are two types of rainforests, tropical and temperate.
